The primary role of a phlebotomist is to draw blood typically done through venal puncture.  if equipped with special training, the phlebotomist may also be able to draw blood through arteries and give injections, administer IV medications, and set up intravenous lines.  Added to these technical functions is establishing rapport with patients before, during and after testing procedures, and maintaining the standards of cleanliness, safety and quality of the laboratory at all times.

 

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

Education:  Bachelor of Science in Nursing / BS in Medical Technology

Requirements:  Certification and License in Intravenous Therapy

Training in Phlebotomy (1 week)

 No work experience required.
